Persephone

PERSEPHONE

The Summoning : 1
Acrylic on Canvas
24 × 36 in.
Original, 1 of 1

I think Persephone lives somewhere inside every woman. Eventually we all discover there are places inside ourselves that the light never touches.

I used to think those were the parts of me I needed to heal. The anger that stayed longer than it should. The grief that changed shape but never completely left. The memories that made me someone I would not have become otherwise. I kept imagining there was some finished version of me waiting on the other side of healing who would finally be free of all of it. There isn't.

And strangely, I find that comforting now. Persephone reminds us what it means to stop treating our darkness like evidence that we are broken.

I think there is an Underworld in all of us. A place where we keep what we have lost, what we have survived, what we cannot forgive, what we still ache for, and the versions of ourselves that may have existed if we hadn't faced the consequences of others' actions upon us.

This painting is for that place. Not to drag it into the light. Just to finally admit that it belongs to us, too.
