NYX

The Summoning : 1
Acrylic on Canvas
16 × 40 in.
Original, 1 of 1

Before there was light, there was darkness. In Greek mythology, Nyx is the primordial goddess of night, a force so ancient and formidable that even Zeus feared her. She existed before the Olympian gods, before their kingdoms, before the world was governed by men.

Nyx is the first self-portrait I painted in my Goddess Series, born from a lifetime of rage at the systems that have taught women to endure violence, surrender autonomy, question their experiences, and remain silent in the face of injustice. I painted her for every woman whose body has been treated as territory, whose voice has been dismissed, and whose anger has been mistaken for weakness. For women not healed of every hurt, not emptied of anger, not made softer or easier to understand. Simply a woman, in all her complexity.

Here, Nyx stands in the moment before she unleashes a curse upon the men of the earth for their mistreatment of women. She does not beg for justice from the systems that have denied it. She is the reckoning. Her darkness is not evil; it is ancient, sovereign, and beyond the reach of those who mistake domination for power.
