Lilith
LILITH
The Summoning : 1
Acrylic on Canvas
16 × 20 in.
Original, 1 of 1
They made a monster of the woman who would not kneel. In the medieval Jewish legend of Lilith, she was Adam's first wife, created from the same earth as him. When he demanded her submission, she refused. Rather than remain in "paradise" as something less than his equal, she chose exile. Over centuries, she was demonized for this choice. Oh how easily a woman's refusal to submit can be rewritten as something monstrous.
Lilith was the first goddess I ever painted. I had no idea then that she would become the beginning of an entire collection, or that these paintings would grow into something so much bigger than I ever imagined. There is something especially meaningful about having begun with a woman who refused to let the world decide who she was.
To me, Lilith does not represent the rejection of love, but the rejection of a love that demands self abandonment.
