The Summoning : 1
Acrylic on Canvas

Calypso is a portrait of desire... and the moment we realize the power in release.

In Greek mythology, Calypso offers Odysseus paradise, immortality, and herself, yet none of it can make him choose to stay. Her island becomes a beautiful kind of captivity: everything one could imagine wanting, except the freedom to leave. In her, I saw the painful space between love and possession, fantasy and truth, holding on and finally opening your hands.

There is something deeply human in Calypso’s refusal to let go. Most of us have loved something past the point of knowing it was ours to keep... a person, a future, a version of ourselves, a life we were certain we were supposed to have. Sometimes we hold tighter because releasing it would mean grieving not only what existed, but everything we imagined it could become.

But there is power in the moment desire stops becoming a cage. Calypso asks us to understand that love cannot be made more real through possession, and that sometimes the most devastating act of love is release.

As part of The Summoning : 1, Calypso lives in that painful space between wanting and releasing. The moment you understand that no matter how deeply you love something, you cannot love it into choosing you... and there is far more power in opening your hands than losing yourself trying to hold on.
