Aphrodite

APHRODITE

I think there is an Aphrodite in every woman, but I don't think she is the part of us that wants to be beautiful. I think she is the part that wants to feel alive inside her own body.

So much of being a woman is learning to see ourselves from the outside. We learn very young what is beautiful, desirable, too much, not enough. We become painfully aware of being looked at. We spend so much time wondering how we are being seen that we forget what it feels like to simply belong to ourselves.

That is what Aphrodite became for me while I was painting her. Not beauty for someone else's consumption, but pleasure without an audience. Sensuality that doesn't require permission. The private intimacy of being completely at home in your own skin.

There have been versions of me that needed to be wanted in order to feel beautiful. I have loved them, but I don't want to live there anymore. I want beauty that exists even when no one is looking. Desire that begins with what I want. A body that isn't an object I am constantly observing from across the room, but the place I actually live.

Maybe that is why Aphrodite has survived thousands of years of people trying to reduce her to beauty and sex. There is something much more dangerous underneath both. A woman who belongs entirely to herself.
